Comprehensive trek overview

The Mount Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri starts with a 40-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. After landing in Lukla, you will reach Phakding on the first day. The following day, you will reach Namche Bazaar, often known as the gateway to Everest. You will spend one more day at Namche for acclimatization

After resting for a day at Namche, you will head to Dole which lies west of Namche. The path progresses through forested areas with wildlives like musk deer, Himalayan Thar, and Himalayan pheasant.  From Dole, the trek continues to Machhermo.

On the sixth day of Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Ri trek, you will reach Gokyo Valley, where you will spend an entire day exploring the incredible landscapes, including Goko Lakes and Gokyo Ri viewpoint. After a day’s rest at Gokyo, you will return to Phortse Village and Pheriche, joining the classic Everest Base Camp route.

A day of trek from Pheriche takes you to Lobuche via Dengboche Village. Lobuche used to serve as a summer yak-grazing post in the past. The Everest Base Camp (EBC) is not far from Lobuche, so the following day you will reach EBC. However, before you trek to Mount Everest Base Camp, we will take you to Gorak Shep, where we will leave our belongings before ascending to Everest Base Camp.

The Everest Base Camp elevation is 5,364m, and the views from EBC are mind-blowing as you witness the incredible landscapes from the base camp of the world’s tallest mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

You might feel overwhelmed when you reach the Everest Base Camp, which is quite normal considering the challenges you undergo to reach EBC. At the Everest Base Camp, during the climbing season, you will find climbers readying themselves to climb Mount Everest. In fact, the Everest Base Camp trek is the pinnacle of Himalayan trekking in Nepal. After enjoying the views from EBC, you will descend to Gorak Shep, where you will spend the night.

The following morning, we will take you to Kala Patthar so that you can enjoy the dawn break from beyond the world’s highest mountains, including Mt. Everest. Then, you will return to Gorak Shep, have breakfast, and then return to Pheriche.

From Pheriche, you will continue descending as you head back to Lukla. After a night at Pheriche, the next day, you will reach Namche Bazaar, and from Namche, one more day of the trek will take you to Lukla. You will spend the last night in the trek region at Lukla, and your Everest Base Camp hike concludes. The following morning we will fly you back to Kathmandu.

Is Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri suitable for You?

This Gokyo Ri and Everest Base Camp Trek is a moderately challenging trek. It demands a high level of physical fitness due to the harsh terrain. However, provided you are normally fit, you can complete this trek. If you have prior experience with high-altitude treks, this will help you, but not necessary.

How does the Gokyo Lakes with Everest Base Camp Trek differ from other Everest Base Camp treks?

The Gokyo Lakes with Everest Base Camp Trek is a rewarding adventure in the Everest region. While many trekkers are familiar with the usual trails in this area, our route diverges from the standard path to Everest Base Camp. It takes you to the tranquil and breathtaking Gokyo Valley lakes region before rejoining the classic Everest Base Camp trail.

What can you see from Gokyo Ri Viewpoint?

You will also enjoy the views from the Gokyo Ri Viewpoint, which allows you to enjoy the views of some of the tallest mountains on earth: Everest (8,848m/29,028ft), Cho Oyu (8,201m), Mount Lhotse (8,516m), and Mount Makalu (8,463m). Moreover, you will also view Ngozumpa Glacier - the largest Himalayan glacier.

DWT recommends all our valuable clients arrive at Kathmandu as early as possible, at least one day before the trek departure date, for last-minute preparations. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Lukla to Kathmandu may get delayed due to the weather. In such cases, we reschedule these flights to the next available flight. So, we suggest our clients add at least 2 extra days as a cushion to the trip to avoid international flight delays back to their home country.

EBC with Gokyo Ri Package Information

Arrival, Welcome, and Trek Start

We will receive you at Kathmandu Airport. You will find our representative holding a placard with your name on it. They will present you with a marigold garland and you will enjoy a free airport-to-hotel transfer.

On the trek departure day,  in peak seasons (March, April, May, September, October, and November), flights from Kathmandu to Lukla might be rerouted to Manthali Airport.

For an early morning Lukla flight, we will pick you up at your hotel around 12:30 am and then take you on a 5-hour drive to Manthali Airport. The subsequent flight from Manthali to Lukla takes approximately 20 minutes. In other months, you will fly directly from Kathmandu to Manthali.

Accommodations

This trek package includes 14 nights of accommodations in the trek region. You will be staying at the best possible lodges that we hand-select. Most rooms we provide are on a twin-sharing basis. You will stay in rooms with attached bathrooms at Phakding, Namche (3N), and Lukla. Similarly, we will provide standard rooms at Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo (2N), Phortse, Pheriche (2N), Lobuche, and Gorakshep.

You will spend at least two nights of hotel stays in Kathmandu, one before the trek starts and the other after the trek but it is not included in the trek package. Hot showers, charging facilities for your devices, and Wi-Fi are available at lodges/tea houses but incur additional fees.

Meals

We will provide you with enough nutritious meals, your options may become more limited as you ascend. We will provide you with full-board (main course) meals throughout the trek, including 15 breakfasts, 14 lunches, and 14 dinners. Your meals will mostly be of local, Asian, or Western cuisine. The staple Nepali food consists of Dal (lentils), Bhat (rice), and Tarkari (often vegetable curry).

For better health, we recommend consuming liquids such as green tea, lemon tea, hot lemon, ginger tea, garlic soup (a must-have), and fresh vegetables at high elevations. We advise against consuming them due to potential hygiene concerns. We also recommend you avoid dairy products, alcoholic beverages, caffeinated items, and hot chocolates at high altitudes.

Luggage

For every two trekkers, we provide one porter with a luggage limit of 9 kg per trekker (18 kg total). We don't overload porters and recommend packing only essentials. We expect you to bring a small backpack for valuables and documents. You can store the excess baggage at your hotel or our office for free.

Facilities and Essentials

  • Water

You can purchase packed mineral water from local lodges or en-route shops. However, for ecological reasons, we advise you to bring a water bottle, buy boiled/bottled water from lodges, and put it in your water bottle. We also recommend you use water purification pills. If you do not have water purification pills, our team can provide them.

  • Communication

We keep in daily contact with our groups through trek leaders using mobiles and are always ready to handle emergencies. You can buy a local SIM card in Kathmandu, though signal strength may vary based on the network.

Travel Essentials

  • Visa

All foreign nationals (except Indians) require a visa to enter Nepal, which they can get on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or at immigration checkpoints along Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet borders. To apply for a visa, you must possess a passport with at least six months of validity, a passport-size photograph, and the applicable visa fees. The current visa cost is USD 50 for a 30-day stay. Please visit https://www.immigration.gov.np/  to stay up-to-date on the latest information.

  • Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for all participants and must cover medical and helicopter rescue expenses up to the highest altitude (5,555 m). In an emergency, we will utilize your insurance policy and other pertinent documents to expedite evacuation and transfer you to medical centers.

Before purchasing travel insurance, please call the insurance provider and confirm whether they offer Heli-rescue and evacuation coverage up to 5,555 m in addition to health care costs. Do not rely only on insurance websites.

  • Currency Exchange

The official currency is Nepali Rupees (NRS/Rs), and 1 USD is almost equal to NRS.133. If you have Indian Rupees (INR), please note that only Indian notes of 100 are legal in Nepal.

If you bring cash (major currencies) you can easily exchange it for Nepali Rupees in one of the several legal cash exchanges in Kathmandu, especially Thamel.

You can also withdraw cash in Nepali Rupees using ATMs in Kathmandu. However, there are limitations and fees associated. Please note most Nepali banks do not honor torn, faded, or old notes. So bring only new crisp notes.

  • Extra Expenses

Though this package covers most expenses during the trek, it does not cover all expenditures. You must bring your money for expenses, such as meals and accommodations in Kathmandu, visa application, additional meal courses, travel insurance policy purchase, beverages (hot(tea/coffee), cold and alcoholic drinks), snacks, tips, and souvenirs. Since trek regions do not have cash exchange facilities, you must exchange your foreign currency in Kathmandu based on your spending habits.

Trek Season and Weather Conditions

The best trek seasons are spring (March-May)  and autumn (September-November) for clear skies, comfortable temperatures,  and stunning views. During spring, the temperature at high altitudes can rise to 20 °C and fall to  -5 °C at night. Similarly, during autumn, the temperature at high altitudes can reach up to 25 °C during the day and drop to -10 °C at night.

We also conduct treks during summer (June-August) and winter (December-February). In summer, the temperatures at high altitudes reach 27 °C and drop to 5 °C at night. Similarly, in winter, the day temperature can reach 15 °C and come down to  -20 °C.

However, the monsoon rain makes the lower elevations slippery, and the chances of flight delays increase during summer. In winter, the temperatures in high elevations are frigid, and heavy snow can cover the trails.

Typical Day

After breakfast, the trek usually begins around 7-8 am, depending on the distance and terrain for the day. After trekking for three to four hours, you'll take a midday break for lunch before continuing the trek. The afternoon trek will be shorter, and once you reach your destination, you can indulge in dietary snacks and explore the surroundings.

We will serve dinner around 6-7 pm. After dinner, your leader/guide will brief you about the next day's plan. Then, you can engage in friendly conversations, enjoy onboard games like cards and Monopoly, or watch documentaries. Many foreign trekkers enjoy learning a few fun Nepalese words from our crew.

Trip Conclusion

  • Farewell Dinner

After the trek, we will organize a farewell dinner in Kathmandu. This gathering gives you a chance to share your experiences.  Later, we will provide you with a trek achievement certificate.

  • Departure

As your adventure concludes, we’ll arrange your hotel-to-airport transfer, ensuring your departure from Nepal is as smooth as your arrival. Trekking the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Ri was an unforgettable odyssey. I will never forget this journey thanks to our trekking company Discovery World Trekking and its CEO Paul Gurung. He is an amazing person and adjusted my trek according to our needs.

Our guide, with their expert knowledge and warm hospitality, made the journey smooth and enjoyable. He looked after us in every path. We had a lot of fun, especially the card games we played. Also, the porters were really strong and helped me when I was having discomfort at a higher altitude.

I highly recommend this trek to anyone seeking adventure and a deeper connection with nature. Thank you to the entire DWT team for an extraordinary journey! They truly made me feel like a family.

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri extension was an absolute thrill! Discovery World Trekking has really crafted an amazing itinerary plan to view ebc along with the Gokyo region. Paul said this was a slightly different route than the classic one so I was skeptical but upon going on the trek, it was still a 10/10 journey.

Their guides were top-notch, ensuring safety and providing fascinating insights. The landscapes were stunning, especially the climb to Gokyo Ri for those epic mountain views. Accommodations were cozy, and the camaraderie among trekkers was heartwarming. Highly recommend this unforgettable journey!
