The drive will take around five hours.

Comprehensive Everest Base Camp Trek Guide

Your trek to Everest Base Camp starts with an awe-inspiring 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Lukla (2,840m/9,317 ft) is the starting and endpoint of the trek.

After getting off the flight at the Lukla Airport, the long hike in the Khumbu Region begins, and your destination for this day is Phakding. The next day will take you into the Sagarmatha National Park to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Mount Everest. You will acclimatize for a day in Namche.

After a day of acclimation, you will leave Namche Bazaar and continue your journey by heading to Tengboche - another gem in the Khumbu region. The way from Namche to Tengboche goes up and down, and from the path, you will get to savor the views of Nuptse, Lhotse, and more. You will spend the night at Tengboche.

The following morning, you will collect yourself and continue your journey by trekking to Dingboche (4410m/14470ft), from where we can see the entire Himalayan ranges in the Khumbu region. You will head to Dingboche from Tengboche.

Pangboche Monastery, built in the 16th Century, lies on the way to Dibgboche. In the Dingboche region, you will see barley, buckwheat, and potato fields surrounded by stone walls to protect them from wind and wild animals. By reaching Dingboche, you will have gained a high altitude, and once more, it is time for acclimatization.

After spending a day at Dingboche, you will trek to Lobuche (4,940m/16,210 ft) walking alongside the Khumbu Glacier, but you start on the trail that ascends to the Pheriche village. As you move forward, you will enjoy the views of Pumori, Lingtren, and Khumbutse, and arrive at Lobuche. You will spend that night at Lobuche.

After a night at Lobuche, you are on the final big day of reaching the base camp. However, before reaching EBC, you will hike to Gorak Shep (5,164m/16,942 ft). At Gorak Shep, you will leave your belongings and walk alongside the Khumbu Glacier until you reach the EBC.

This base camp at Mount Everest lies at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet). It's the destination for trekkers seeking to experience the Himalayan landscapes and the unique Sherpa culture. However, the highest point of this trek is Kala Patthar at 5,555 meters.

You will stay at EBC for some time and take a short break basking in the natural beauty around the world's highest peak. Reaching Everest Base Camp is a huge achievement for mountaineers and adventurers. You will return to Gorak Shep for the evening and spend the night there. Now the return begins, you will mostly follow the path that took you to EBC to return to Namche and then to Lukla.  You will spend the night at Lukla, anticipating a return to Kathmandu the next day.

If everything is planned out, you will return to Kathmandu via flight from Lukla on your fourteenth day.

DWT recommends all our valuable clients arrive at Kathmandu as early as possible, at least one day before the trek departure date, for last-minute preparations. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Lukla to Kathmandu may get delayed due to the weather. In such cases, we reschedule these flights to the next available flight. So, we suggest our clients add at least 2 extra days as a cushion to the trip to avoid international flight delays back to their home country.

Water: You can buy bottled water from the en-route shops/tea houses. However, we advise you to bring a water bottle and fill it with boiled or filtered water bought from tea houses/lodges for ecological reasons. Further, we recommend you use water purification methods. We can provide you with purification pills if you request us.

Communication: You can buy a local SIM in Kathmandu. However, depending on the network carrier, it may not be strong enough at higher altitudes. Our head office stays in touch with all trekking teams via the trek leader over the phone at least once a day.

Visa

All foreigners, except Indians, require a visa to visit Nepal. Most foreigners can get an on-arrival visa at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. To get this visa, you need to have a passport with at least six months of validity, two passport-size photos, and an application fee. The application fee depends on the length of stay. The current rate is USD 50 for a 30-day stay. Please, visit the www.immigration.gov.np portal for detailed information.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for this trek. Your insurance must cover health care and emergency helicopter evacuation costs up to 5,500 m. Please call your insurer and ensure that your insurance covers helicopter evacuation.

Currency Exchange

1 USD = ~ NPR (Nepalese Rupees) 133. Please bring major currencies (USD, GBP, EURO) and exchange them in Kathmandu. We advise using legal currency exchanges in Kathmandu for a quick and easy experience. You can withdraw NPR from ATMs in Kathmandu, but you might have to pay withdrawal fees. If you have Indian Rupees, please remember that only INR 100 notes are legal in Nepal.

Extra Expenses

You will need money for drinks (hot, cold, and alcoholic), snacks, souvenirs, and tips. You will need around USD 15 per trek day for personal expenses.

Trek Season and Weather Conditions

The best trek seasons are spring (March-May)  and autumn (September-November) for clear skies, comfortable temperatures,  and stunning views.

During spring, the temperature at high altitudes can rise to 20 °C and fall to  -5 °C at night. Similarly, during autumn, the temperature at high altitudes can reach up to 25 °C during the day and drop to -10 °C at night.

We also conduct treks during summer (June-August) and winter (December-February). In summer, the temperatures at high altitudes reach 27 °C and come down to 5 °C at night. Similarly, in winter, the day temperature can reach 15 °C and come down to  -20 °C.

However, the monsoon rain makes the lower elevations slippery, and there are chances of flight delays in summer. In winter, the temperatures in high elevations are frigid, and heavy snow can cover the trails.

Flight Delays

In case of flight delays to Lukla due to weather, the flights will be rescheduled to the next flight. You can book a helicopter flight, but it will set you back USD 500 to 1,000 on a shared flight. To account for the flight delays, we recommend you add two extra days as a buffer for potential delays.

Typical Day

Each day of your trek, you'll enjoy stunning scenery, take photos, try local dishes, and explore villages. Expert Sherpas will share insights about the locations, while porters carry most of your luggage. You'll carry a small bag for valuables.

Trekking starts after breakfast, typically 7 to 8 am, followed by a walk of three to four hours. You will have lunch, rest, and then continue a shorter afternoon walk that lasts around two hours. After arriving at your lodge, you'll have snacks and free time to explore.

We serve dinner around 6 to 7 pm, followed by a briefing on the next day’s trek. You can then relax with board games, documentaries, or learning Nepali words.

Trip Conclusion and Feedback

We will organize a farewell dinner in Kathmandu after the trek is complete and present you with a printed certificate of trek achievement. It is also a great time to provide feedback and share your experiences on travel portals.

Departure

On your departure to your home country, we will drive you to Tribhuvan International Airport in a private vehicle, hoping you will return to Nepal for future treks.

Ecotourism Practices

We prioritize eco-friendly practices, reducing plastic waste by using reusable water bottles, and partnering with local lodges to support communities. Our conservation efforts include following park rules and promoting responsible trekking.

In collaboration with the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP), we organize eco-friendly trips that benefit travelers and local communities. We follow a policy of leaving only the footprints behind in the trek regions.

Tipping Culture

In Nepali culture, a tip is an honored way to say thank you (Dhanyabad) for good service. We advise you to tip collectively, as a group, at the end of the trek (for the guide and the porters).

The tip amount is entirely a personal preference that may depend more or less on your perception of service quality, length of trip, budget, and appreciation of their work.

We look forward to guiding you on the life-changing trek to EBC through some of the most dazzling landscapes on the planet.

From my initial contact, Paul was incredibly responsive, helpful and answered all of the many questions I had. Paul video-called me via WhatsApp to cover the itinerary items on the Everest Base Camp trek and how they would all come together. The team members from Discovery World Trekking met me at the airport upon arrival.

The EBC trek itself will probably remain one of the best things I've done in my life. Phurba was my guide for the 14-day trip and he was incredible! Throughout the journey, he was incredibly kind, funny, and thoughtful (also a hiking machine).

I had an absolute blast and feel so lucky to have had him as my guide. Reaching the top of Kala Patthar at sunrise is something I won't forget for the rest of my life. Thank you, Paul, thank you Phurba, thank you DWT!

We had such an amazing experience hiking to Everest Base Camp, and a lot of it had to do with the incredible guides and porters who really took care of us. Ask for a detailed itinerary before your trip so you can train properly and come prepared, although flexibility is necessary if terrain changes or other weather events occur.

Along the way, you can expect lots of dancing from the music-loving porters, unbelievable views, and delicious tea (honey lemon ginger and Nepali black tea were my faves). If you’re thinking about trekking in Nepal, you won’t regret going with Discovery World Trekking!

My friend and I went for the EBC trek with Discovery World Trekking and had the most amazing experience.

Our guide, Ngima was supportive, quite experienced, and very knowledgeable. Besides, all the trekking guidance, he provided us with a lot of insight into the culture and people and he is also an amazing photographer. We got the most beautiful shots thanks to him.

Paul was always one phone call away in case we needed any information or additional support. Everything (food, accommodation, etc) was very well organized. The porters were also very reliable and would go the extra mile(sometimes quite literally) to ensure we were comfortable and had the best experience.

I would recommend DWT to anyone who wishes to go to Nepal on such treks or expeditions. Can’t wait to be back in Nepal for more such adventures with DWT!

What if my flight to/ from Lukla is canceled or delayed?

We recommend you allocate an extra 2 / 3 days for the hike to account for unpredictable weather. In rough weather flights from Lukla to Kathmandu or vice versa get canceled. In such cases, the flight is automatically rescheduled for the next day possible.

If you have a very tight schedule, you can charter a helicopter to ensure you are on schedule for the trek or your flight back home. However, it will cost you around 550 USD extra, provided five persons share the cost. But, if the visibility is less than 1,500 meters, it is impossible to operate a helicopter, and we will reschedule the flight.
